Articles: Semiconductor diodes01. DiodesA diode is a two-terminal device (except that thermionic diodes may also have one or two ancillary terminals for a heater). Diodes have two active electrodes between which the signal of interest may flow, and most are used for their unidirectional current property. The varcap diode is used as an electrically adjustable capacitor. 02. Diode Modelling Diode modeling refers to the mathematical models used to approximate the actual behavior of real diodes to enable calculations and circuit analysis. A diode's I-V curve is nonlinear (it is well described by the Shockley diode law). This nonlinearity complicates calculations in circuits involving diodes, so simpler models are often required. 03. Schottky Diode The Schottky diode (named after German physicist Walter H. Schottky; also known as hot carrier diode) is a semiconductor diode with a low forward voltage drop and a very fast switching action. Typical applications include discharge-protection for solar cells connected to lead-acid batteries and in switched-mode power supplies; in both cases the low forward voltage leads to increased efficiency. 04. P-N Junction A p-n junction is formed by combining P-type and N-type semiconductors together in very close contact. Normally they are manufactured from a single crystal with different dopant concentrations diffused across it. Creating a semiconductor from two separate pieces of material introduces a grain boundary between them which would severely inhibit its utility by scattering the electrons and holes. |
